- Duration
- 1 day
- Theme
- First visit
- Budget
- ₹2,500–5,000 per person including two good meals
- Best for
- First-time visitors, Architecture lovers, Walkers
If you have exactly one day, this is it. The route runs north from the Gateway of India through Colaba, the museum quarter and the Victorian Fort district, and ends on the sea wall at Marine Drive as the lights come on. Everything is within a few kilometres, most of it walkable, and it strings together the city's UNESCO-listed architecture, its best-known bazaar strip and two of its most-loved restaurants. Start early: the Gateway is at its best before the crowds, and Marine Drive at its best after them.
The plan
Gateway of India before the crowds: Gateway of India
Arrive early, when the promenade belongs to joggers and pigeons and the Taj Mahal Palace catches the low light. Walk the full length of Apollo Bunder.
Breakfast in Colaba: Bayview Cafe
A proper sit-down breakfast before the day starts in earnest. Sea view, good coffee, and the Causeway right outside.
Colaba Causeway: Colaba Causeway
Walk it north to south now while the stalls are setting up and haggling is relaxed. Leopold Café and Regal Cinema mark the northern end.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya
The city's grand museum. Two hours covers the highlights, miniature paintings, the sculpture gallery and the building itself.
Lunch at Trishna: Trishna
The Kala Ghoda seafood institution. Order the butter-pepper-garlic crab; book ahead, it fills every day.
Kala Ghoda and Jehangir Art Gallery: Kala Ghoda Art District
Drift through the art district: whatever is showing at Jehangir, the David Sassoon Library, the design shops on Rampart Row.
Flora Fountain and the Fort streets: Flora Fountain (Hutatma Chowk)
The centre of the Victorian city. Look south to the High Court and University, then north up Dadabhai Naoroji Road.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)
The Gothic station at rush hour, go inside the main hall, then cross to the traffic island opposite for the full façade.
Marine Drive at sunset: Marine Drive
Start at Nariman Point and walk north with the sun setting ahead of you. Sit on the wall as the Queen's Necklace switches on.
Dinner at Dome: Dome - InterContinental
Rooftop over Marine Drive with the whole necklace below you. The most memorable place to end a first day in the city.
Before you go
- Wear real walking shoes, this is 6–7 km on foot with taxi hops
- Sunday is the quietest day for the Fort's streets and the easiest for photos; museums are open
- Carry small notes for the Causeway and a bottle of water; refill at the museum café
- If it's monsoon, swap the Marine Drive sunset for tea at a sea-facing café and watch the waves instead
