About Girgaon
The old Marathi heart of Bombay, and the part of the island city that still looks like the one that existed before the towers. Girgaon is chawls and lanes and temple gullies, with the Royal Opera House at one end and the beach at the other. It is also where Ganeshotsav is at its most intense: the processions that end at Chowpatty start in these streets.
- Getting there
- Charni Road on the Western line, five minutes on foot from almost everything here.
- When to go
- Evening for the beach. During Ganeshotsav, any time, and expect to walk.
Known for
- Girgaon Chowpatty at the top of Marine Drive
- The Royal Opera House, built in 1911 and restored a century later
- Chawl lanes and old temples off the main road
- Ganeshotsav, at its loudest
Tip. The lanes behind the main road are residential and worth a wander, but they are people’s homes rather than a sight. Walk quietly.
