About Chembur
An eastern suburb with a particular history: much of it was settled by families who arrived from Sindh after Partition, and the food still reflects that. R.K. Studios stood here for six decades before it was sold, and Chembur remains more of a place people live than a place people visit, which is exactly what makes it worth eating in.
- Getting there
- Chembur on the Harbour line, or Metro Line 2B, whose Chembur station is a short walk from the railway station. The monorail also starts here, but it has been shut for an overhaul since September 2025.
- When to go
- Evening, when Diamond Garden and the surrounding food streets fill up.
Known for
- Sindhi and Punjabi food that arrived with the neighbourhood
- Diamond Garden and the streets around it
- Sindhi breakfast counters in the old camp
- Easy reach of the eastern freeway into town
Tip. The eastern freeway puts Chembur about twenty minutes from Fort outside rush hour, which surprises people who assume the eastern suburbs are far.
