About Mahalaxmi
A strip of central Mumbai that holds a racecourse, a Devi temple, and the largest open-air laundry in the world within a kilometre of each other. The racecourse doubles as the city’s biggest open-air concert ground, which is why Mahalaxmi turns up on ticket stubs far more often than its size suggests.
- Getting there
- Mahalaxmi on the Western line, which sits between the racecourse and Dhobi Ghat.
- When to go
- Early morning for Dhobi Ghat, when the washing is in full swing.
Known for
- Mahalaxmi Temple, one of the city’s most visited
- Mahalaxmi Racecourse, and the festivals held on it
- Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, best seen from the station bridge
- Haji Ali Dargah, a short way west
Tip. The view of Dhobi Ghat from the bridge beside the station is free and better than any paid vantage point.
