About Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum
Opened in 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay, and gorgeously restored in 2008, the museum's gilded Palladian interior is as much the exhibit as the collection: clay models of 19th-century Mumbai trades and communities, maps, dioramas and decorative arts telling the story of how the city was made. It sits inside the Byculla zoo gardens (Rani Baug).
Tips
- The ground-floor clay figures of Bombay's communities are the collection's heart
- The zoo gardens (Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan) are worth a walk after
- Byculla's Irani cafés and the nearby Gloria Church make a good half-day
