About Sanjay Gandhi National Park & Kanheri Caves
One of the few national parks in the world enclosed by a metropolis, SGNP covers the hills of north Mumbai with dry deciduous forest, two lakes and a resident leopard population. Its centrepiece is Kanheri, a complex of 109 rock-cut Buddhist caves dating from the 1st century BCE, with a monumental chaitya hall and carved Buddhas. A toy train, boating and a tiger safari enclosure keep the family end busy.
Tips
- Kanheri is 7 km inside the gate, take the shuttle bus or hire a bike at the entrance
- Start early; the caves face east and light beautifully before 10 AM
- Carry water and food, options inside are limited
