About Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat
Rows of concrete washing pens, each with its own flogging stone, where several hundred dhobis wash and dry a good share of the city's hotel linen and hospital sheets by hand every day. The colour-sorted lines of drying laundry, viewed from the bridge outside Mahalaxmi station, are one of Mumbai's most photographed sights. Guided walks inside are possible for a small fee.
Tips
- The viewing point is the road bridge beside Mahalaxmi station's east exit
- If you go in, tip your guide, the dhobis are working, not performing
- Haji Ali and the Mahalaxmi Racecourse are within 15 minutes' walk
