About Global Vipassana Pagoda
Completed in 2008 on the Gorai peninsula, the pagoda enshrines relics of the Buddha beneath a dome that seats 8,000 meditators without a single supporting column. Modelled on Yangon's Shwedagon, it is dedicated to the Vipassana meditation tradition and offers free short courses. The approach, by ferry across Gorai creek, makes it feel far from the city.
Tips
- Take the ferry from Gorai jetty (near Borivali), 10 minutes and the scenic way in
- A 20-minute Anapana meditation session is offered to visitors free of charge
- Dress modestly; silence is expected inside the dome
